Tokyo Crazy Paradise Vol 1 Tokyo Kureiji Paradaisu in Japanese Yoshiki Nakamura 9784592128618 Books

Let me just say, this is by far the best shoujo I've ever read. Truthfully, it barely qualifies as a shoujo. It has everything: action, comedy, romance, a bit of drama, and loveable characters. If you liked Skip Beat, you'll love this as it is by the same author and the main character is very similar. While the drawing style is very outdated and will remind you of the '90s (as that's when it was created), I got used to it quickly. The main character, unlike most heroines in shoujo's can take care of her self and can take a beating. She never gives off the damsel in distress vibe, which is good as she is a bodyguard of the head of the yakuza who is also her classmate. She can be a bit thick sometimes and naïve, but I think it rounds her out as she'd probably be too overpowered if she didn't, and often times, it kind of makes her charming rather than distract from her character. If she was a boy, she could be your typical shounen hero in that regard, strong but dense (or kind of stupid). When you remember she's only 14, some of her headstrong tendencies make sense. She's still at the age where she doesn't think things through as young teenagers rarely think of long lasting consequences and think they are invincible. The male lead offsets this characteristic of hers as he has been rooted in reality from a young age and he and she balance each others faults wonderfully. She definitely grows as a character by the end, no longer naïve and doesn't pretend to be. This is a classic that always has me coming back. It was really a shame it was never translated into English, but if you can read Japanese, I totally recommend.
